Twelve miles of Grace Bay, and a reef at the end of it.
Which snorkel boat actually reaches the wall. What a golf cart costs for the week. Whether the Grand Turk day is worth the flight across the bank. Reviews of every tour you can book in Turks and Caicos.
The reef, a catamaran, the iguana cays, and a buggy for the rest of it.
Four bookings a first week on Providenciales tends to hang off. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.
01The first morning4hour Group Half Day Snorkeling Excursion in Grace BayStraight out to the barrier reef from Grace Bay, half a day, back for lunch. More people book this than anything else on the island.
02The catamaran day4-Hour Catamaran Sail and Snorkel Tour from Grace BaySail out under canvas, swim off the back, drinks on the trampoline coming home. The one day nobody regrets paying for.
03The cay runMorning Half Day Cruise from Providenciales with Snorkeling and Iguana IslandSnorkel stop, then a landing on the little cay where the rock iguanas come down the beach to meet the boat.
04The land dayLove Buggy Island Tour with LunchA buggy, a cooler and the road round Providenciales. Chalk Sound, Sapodilla Hill and a lunch stop you would never find on foot.
Nothing on Providenciales is more than ten minutes from a boat ramp.
The barrier reef sits a mile off Grace Bay and the wall drops away just beyond it. Three kinds of day get you out there, and they cost very different money.
The days out more people book than anything else in Turks and Caicos.

Grand Turk is ninety kilometres and one salt-white town away.
The other island a visitor actually reaches: a cruise pier, a lighthouse on the north bluff, wooden Bermudian houses along Duke Street, and a wall two hundred metres offshore that divers fly in for. Most of it is done on four wheels in an afternoon.
Every Grand Turk day out →What a day out in Turks and Caicos actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. This is not a cheap island, but the gap between the boat you want and the boat you settle for is smaller than it looks.

Three things that only happen on this bank.
Warm water and white sand run the length of the Caribbean. Clear-hulled kayaks over a mangrove nursery, a stingray flat you stand up in, and a freighter rusting on the reef do not.

Clear Kayaks Over the Mangroves
The kayaks are transparent, and on Providenciales that is not a gimmick. The mangrove channels behind Leeward run barely a metre deep over pale sand, so juvenile turtles, rays and small barracuda pass directly under the hull. Paddles go out early and late, when the light is low enough to see through the surface, and a drone usually follows for the photographs.

Gibbs Cay and the Stingrays
Off Grand Turk a shallow sand flat sits knee deep for a hundred metres, and generations of southern stingrays have learned that boats mean conch scraps. You stand up in the water and they come to you, heavy and soft-edged. The same trip usually pulls a conch off the bottom and cleans it on the beach in front of you.

The Wrecks Off Providenciales
A cargo ship went onto the reef off the north shore and never came off. It sits in shallow enough water to snorkel rather than dive, broken into sections that fish have taken over completely. Visibility is the whole game here: the wreck reads as scrap in a chop and as a cathedral on a flat morning.

Four bookings in Turks and Caicos that will not wait.
Most of this island can be arranged over breakfast on the day. These four run on moon phases, cruise schedules and a rental fleet far smaller than the number of villas it serves.
- 013 hour Glow Worm Sunset Cruise from ProvidencialesThe glow worms rise a few nights after each full moon and nowhere else in the month. The boat runs on that calendar, not yours.
- 02Gibbs Cay Stingray and Conch Dive AdventureGibbs Cay is a Grand Turk trip and Grand Turk fills its boats around the cruise pier schedule. Ships in port means seats gone.
- 03Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsThere are far more villas on Providenciales than carts on the island. In high season the fleet is spoken for weeks out.
- 04Private Boat Tours to outer islands, snacks drinks- snorkel- cruise! One boat, one party, one day. A charter that is already booked cannot be squeezed, and the good captains repeat-book.
The Christmas winds blow through, and the north shore turns to whitecaps.
From December into March the trades stiffen for days at a time. Grace Bay goes choppy, the reef boats either move to the leeward side or stay tied up, and the snorkelling goes cloudy. The island answer is to come off the water: get a cart, cross to Grand Turk, ride the beach or spend the light on a photo session instead.
